President Obama: 'Kiss Cam' Victim

During 2nd quarter of the USA versus Brazil 2012 London Olympic exhibition match at DC's own Verizon Center, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were victims of the Phonebooth's very aggressive 'Kiss Cam' operators:

The 'Kiss Cam' got the First Couple in the early stages of the 4th quarter once more, and this time they absolutely nailed it.

The Verizon Center 'Kiss Cam' crew deserves some credit here as they are always getting people good, whether it be the President & First Lady, unsuspecting couples in the crowd or players sitting on the bench (home and away, no one is safe), they really get you to look up at the Jumbotron and wish for that oh so magical kiss.

2012 NBA Playoffs Bracket

This is my playoff bracket.  Was in a pool with 6 or so people, $20 each.  Needed the Thunder to win to win the pool because a friend of mine had a similar bracket with Heat winning.  With the Thunder now down 3-1 in the Finals and every possible statistic counting them out, it looks like my demise is near.  Case of undervaluing Heat or overvaluing Thunder?

Russell Westbrook Shouldn't Listen to You

Russell Westbrook has been taking a beating from the media during the Finals largely due to our tendency to put players under a microscope during this time of year.  Mind you, I do not consider myself part of the media or the public, but rather an objective observer / fan of the game and an occasional bettor.  But when a team in the Finals loses, every possible flaw is further magnified and players and coaches alike get grilled, just ask LeBron James.

Following Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Russell Westbrook took a lot of (familiar) criticism from "analyst" Magic Johnson, the media and the entire internet community for supposedly being a selfish ballhog, lacking play-making ability and overall poor decision making.  This all stems, of course, from his aggressive play style that usually either leads to a highlight reel play or a missed shot or turnover.  But the guy is averaging near triple-double numbers in the Finals and the Thunder have had astounding success throughout the playoffs.  Granted they play a seemingly unsustainable, come-from-behind style as a team, Westbrook has been largely successful in the playoffs and is simply a matchup nightmare.  We have only seen two games of the Finals, and Westbrook is taking a pretty serious beating from nearly everyone, so I decided to resurrect my blog to make a few key points as to why this criticism is unjustified and why he shouldn't listen to what people are saying about him and his game (even though he has made it crystal clear that he does not care what people think).

In response to Russell Westbrook's performance, Magic Johnson (amongst others) went on record to tell the world that Westbrook's game 2 performance was the worst game by a point guard he'd ever seen in the Finals (for a moment, let's ignore the fact that Magic Johnson headlines arguably the worst pregame / halftime crew on television).  Westbrook wasn't phenomenal, but he does what the coaching staff requires of him, and believe it or not, operates within the constraints of the Thunder's dynamic.  In the first quarter of any Thunder game it's Westbrook, Durant, Sefolosha, Ibaka and Perkins.  It's pretty obvious who you want taking shots in the beginning of the game, and that's when Russ get's a lot of his shots up.  Aside from Harden, Durant and Westbrook, the Thunder are a pretty offensively challenged team in terms of personnel, so in the beginning of games, it's Westbrook and Durant.  Most people will respond with, "Durant should get more shots!"  Durant put up 22 shots (including 10 three pointers) to Westbrook's 26 shots, but what the public needs to understand about Durant, is that he is not a volume shooter.  Durant is a supremely efficient scorer, and should shoulder equal blame for the Thunder's game 2 shortcomings.  But within the Durant / Westbrook shot distribution debate, is the fact that Westbrook's aggressive play-style really allows Durant to save his legs for the 4th quarter, where he has dominated.  Russ's energy and shot volume really allow Durant to be preserved for late game heroics should it be necessary.

The fact of the matter is that Russell should probably be taking more shots.  The Thunder's role players were absolutely awful in game 2 and Westbrook often found them good shots, but unfortunately for him they aren't effective offensive players and he was unable to gather more assists, which in turn would lessen the criticism heaped upon him.  In my opinion, any Thunder shot that goes up that isn't being released by Durant, Harden or Westbrook, is a shot I want if I am playing the Thunder.  If that means Russ has the ball even more, then so be it, because the Thunder are much better off with a Westbrook pull-up jumper than almost any Serge Ibaka, Kendrick Perkins or Derek Fisher shot.

This analysis is a response to the criticism of Russell Westbrook's offense, but few recognize his impact on the defensive end.  Those that think Westbrook deserves this criticism have yet to recognize those defensive contributions.  He does so much for this young Thunder squad, whom have been exceeding expectations and improving every year he has been a part of the team.  It's his fourth year in the league and he's an integral part of a team in it's first Finals, and thus it's time to recognize Westbrook's full body of work and the fact that he does not need to change his game.  It's in our nature to criticize because of the big stage, but doubters will have their feelings hurt because Russell Westbrook gets better with every game he plays.

Preseason Observations (as of 12/21)

Preseason makes me realize how much I enjoy watching small market teams ball.  Talented young guys really get a chance to flash some of their skill with extended minutes and carve out a role.  A few small market squads have amassed a good amount of young talent from these "Super-team" transactions (Jazz, Nuggets) and others are in a nice rebuilding position with talented young guys (Wolves, Cavs, Bobcats, Pistons, Kings, Rockets).  But some teams are building towards NBA mediocrity (Wizards, Warriors, Pacers, Sixers).

Just running through some disorganized thoughts I had while watching some of the preseason games tonight:

  • Richard Hamilton on the Bulls seems to be a very sexy fit. Starting 5 as a whole looks much better, should be a realistic contender this year.
    • Now or never for Bulls; paying 4 players (Rose, Deng, Noah, Boozer) $55.6m (via  ) with an amnesty chillin
  • Kyrie Irving will overtake Ramon Sessions in less than 3 games.  Bold prediction, I know.
  • Steph Curry still has jelly ankles, which saddens me greatly
  • I still love Marcus Thornton
  • JJ Hickson is first ballot Preseason HOF
  • Brandon Wright possibly filling the gap of Chandler intrigues me
  • David West misses Chris Paul
  • The Hawks need to sign James Posey
  • NBATV commercials are worse than ever #bringbackshakeweight
  • Kemba Walker's jumper is sopping
  • Best part about this year's Clippers for me: Chauncey Billups playing alongside Chris Paul or Caron Butler reunited with Randy Foye?
  • World Peace could not be found in last night's box score
  • Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayward are ballers
  • Magic are awful.  I want Dwight Howard to get traded already so the Wiz can beat up on someone (hopefully)
  • Marreese Speights is a clown'
  • Will I be cool for knowing who Omri Casspi is when I travel to Israel?  He also looks good
  • Luke LOLangody
  • Lakers will be a higher playoff seed than the Clippers
  • Tyler Hansbrough = Tim Tebow
Wizards Related:
  • Wizards 0-2 preseason is definitely a good thing
  • Nick Young is so chillin
  • Andray Blatche is chillin too
  • Trevor Booker makes me happy
  • Nick Young got an assist
  • It's going to be a long short season

Post Draft Thoughts

Although I didn't really stick with posting my NBA Playoffs bets on the blog, I enjoyed doing it and I will probably do it to a fuller capacity next season, assuming there is one. I found it tough to fully envelope myself in the game if I was thinking about my blog and such. However, DP and I were extremely successful betting throughout the playoffs and the Mavericks were a big part of it. We went 12-1 taking the Mavericks against the spread (ATS) throughout, and the Finals were no different. Anyone who bought points for the Mavs probably felt even better each game they covered. As the season is over, and my sports knowledge is primarily limited to NBA and NFL. DP is taking over the reigns as account manager. We ended up taking a few bets on the Draft and came out on top with all but one of them cashing in. We went heavy on Kemba Walker getting picked later than the 6th Pick (+6.5) and cashed in quite nicely. One would say DP is ballin'.

Regarding the actual draft though, I feel really good with how the Wizards' management performed. Taking Jan Vesely at 6 was obviously the bright spot. We wanted him, he wanted us, a match made in heaven. As he kissed his girlfriend in celebration, we had to pause it (<3 DVR) and make note that she was near 6'3" and upon further Google inspection, realized she was part of the Czech Republic Woman's National team. Anyway, I really liked drafting Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack as we addressed several gaping holes in our roster with young talent. Chris Singleton has the ability to be a lock down defender in the NBA, clearly something the Wizards have lacked since (...Deshawn?) forever, and Shelvin Mack as a solid back-up point guard for John Wall. This ended up possibly being the best draft the Wizards (maybe even Bullets, too) have seen in a long, long time, and the best under Grunfeld by far, so yeah, it's a big deal.

Mavericks vs. Thunder; Game 4 Western Conference Finals

Tonight DP and I have the Mavs taking Game 4 on the road in OKC. One of the best playoff road teams we have ever seen, this team seems to be on a mission and is extremely hungry. Dirk has had some relatively off games, and I think he comes back with a strong(er) performance tonight. Mavs will go up early and OKC will struggle to come back until it's too late, so I like the points and over. Most money is on OKC from what I have seen, but I think we can expect big games from Chandler and Marion tonight. Mavericks have been very good to us all post-season, and we have an incredible 8-1 record taking them against the spread. Feeling good about this one.

May 23, 2011:

  • [Me/DP] Mavericks +155 ML
  • [DP] Mavericks Adjusted Line -4.5 (+250)
  • [DP] Over 195.5
  • [DP] Over 196
  • [DP] Mavericks +4

Futures:

  • [DP] Dirk Nowitzki (Mavs) Odds to Win the 2011 NBA Finals MVP +1500

Sunday's Results:

0-4; massive Bulls fail on Sunday. Keith Bogans especially. First half accumulation = 5, second half accumulation = 0. Lame. Back to the drawing board, these nights happen.

ESPN has too much time on their hands, pt. II

Really just they have their filthy mits everywhere. Basically, a sales rep for Washington Wizards ticket sales gets bold on Friday and posts this status :

"I am a sales rep for the Washington Wizards. John Wall will be our choice as the [No. 1] overall pick in the June draft. If you want a great deal on tickets ... email me."

This guy is about to have another hundred or so friend requests and e-mails because of this stunt. Wizards get a few more ticket sales, too maybe. But I'm really left scratching my head because there isn't a single LeBron James headline. More people care about the Wiz than LeBron James now? John Wall > LeBron James?? I forgot what I was talking about.
